How to Install a Wired Video Doorbell with an Existing Chime
This guide provides the technical process for integrating a smart video doorbell into your home's existing electrical chime system while ensuring stable power delivery.
What You'll Need
- Video doorbell kit
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Voltage tester
- Wire strippers
- Power drill (if mounting new holes)
Steps
Step 1: Power Down
Locate your home's electrical panel and switch off the breaker providing power to the doorbell chime. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the existing doorbell wires to confirm the circuit is dead before touching any components.
Step 2: Verify Transformer Voltage
Check that your transformer provides the required voltage—typically between 16V and 24V AC. If the voltage is too low, the doorbell may reboot during chime activation; if too high, it could damage the internal circuitry.
Step 3: Install the Chime Connector
Open your indoor chime box and locate the 'Front' and 'Trans' terminals. Attach the provided power kit or diode (included with most smart doorbells) to these terminals to regulate current and prevent the chime from humming.
Step 4: Remove Existing Hardware
Unscrew the old doorbell button from the exterior wall. Carefully pull the two wires through the hole, ensuring they do not slip back into the wall cavity.
Step 5: Mount the Bracket
Position the new mounting bracket against the wall and mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes if necessary, then secure the bracket firmly to the surface.
Step 6: Connect the Wiring
Wrap the two existing house wires around the screw terminals on the back of the video doorbell. Since AC current is used, polarity generally does not matter, but ensure the connections are tight and no bare wires are touching.
Step 7: Secure the Device
Carefully push the excess wiring back into the wall and snap the doorbell unit into the mounting bracket. Tighten the security screw at the bottom to prevent theft or tampering.
Step 8: Test and Calibrate
Restore power at the breaker and trigger the doorbell. Use the device's mobile app to select whether you have a mechanical chime (a physical hammer) or a digital chime (electronic melody) to ensure the correct ring tone.
Expert Tips
- If your chime doesn't ring, check the 'Chime Settings' in the app to ensure the internal relay is enabled.
- Use a small amount of electrical tape on wire nuts to prevent loose connections over time.
- If you have a very old transformer, replacing it with a 16V-30VA unit often solves intermittent connectivity issues.
